The Trethorne CAW Cornwall Bowl Team enjoyed a well deserved 2nd round victory over a very good St Enodoc team on Sunday 10th November at Bowood Park. All of the matches were played in an excellent spirit, with Trethorne eventually running out 4-1 winners. A special mention for the youngster in the team, Alex Manuel, playing with his new set of irons received on his 15th birthday, winning his match with Ian Moulds, 4&3. Next up is a Quarter Final match against Mullion, last years runners-up, defeating Trethorne in the semi-final at Trevose. Good luck chaps!!
Trethorne's Frank Wills Salver and CAW Cornwall Bowl teams recently progressed to the 2nd round of both competitions, both at the expense of the same club, Clowance.
The Frank Wills Team won a closely fought match 3-2 at Lanhydrock, whilst the Bowl team were more comfortable with a 5-0 victory at Porthpean. The Frank Wills team will now take on Lanhydrock at Bude, whilst the Bowl team face a tough test against a strong St Enedoc team at Bowood. Good Luck!!
A 7 year personal objective for Justin and his greenkeeping team is now beginning to show true rewards. Much is talked about within the industry of long-term sustainability and lowering our carbon footprint, however, in reality few clubs have fully grasped the issue seriously.
Trethorne's Courser Policy document was written in 2007 with a genuine focus upon the golf course environment - wildlife, new habitats, pest control, reducing the use of chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides and adopting traditional cultural practices including regular aeration of the greens and tees and increasing air and light flow throughout the golf course.
Over the past 12 months Justin and the team have been working towards achieving formal recognition for the Club via the STRI National Environmental Awards (UK). This process has resulted in Trethorne being amongst the final 24 entrants short-listed for the award. We are in good company - St Andrews, Muirfield, The London Club, The Berkshire, Walton Heath, Minchampton Hall - have all been recipients of environmental awards in the past.
The STRI representative carried out an audit of the golf course on the 1st October 2013, and was genuinely impressed at the progress the club has made. We now wait to see which award category Trethorne is placed in, with the results announced in the New Year. Watch this space!!
Trethorne's Corporate Golf Day on Friday 27th September was a huge success, raising £2006.00 for the charity Bowel Cancer West. The day is hosted by the golf club for its business partners, a thank you for their support throughout the year. The charity money was raised through a raffle, Irish Bingo and an Auction at the end of the evening, with holidays to La Manga in Spain and the Scilly Isles helping to raise this fantastic donation. Thank you to everybody who contributed - your cash has gone to a very good cause.
