Captains Page

It’s been an interesting start to the season whereupon I managed to hit a ‘magnificent’ opening tee shot on my Captains Drive In when the ball bumbled its way all of 25 yards and not even reaching the fairway.

This was followed by an appearance in The Cawsey Commercial Texas Scramble which along with playing partners Andrew Jones and Matthew Howard I managed to be a part of the winning team. From the ridiculous to the sublime, although since then my golfing form has taken a nose dive, not that it was particularly good to start with.

Congratulations to Messrs Dean Shipton and Paul Blatchford for a fine win in the Parnall Winter Greensomes, and to Mr Paul Juckett for winning the Lombard Qualifier. I wish him every success in the regional finals at Saunton Sands when he will be representing Trethorne Golf Club alongside our resident professional Robert Moore.

In February I became the very first Captain not to be part of the winning side on an ‘away day’ when the ‘A’ team managed a creditable draw with the ‘B’ team. However I must say a big thank you to Mike Davey and Chippy Wilson for managing a tremendous half when they were 4 down with 4 to play. You saved my bacon guys I owe you both a large drink. The day itself was a tremendous success with 35 players taking part in a match play event held at Bude Golf Club.

Charity

I would like to say a big thank you to Graham Hodge and Les Jewell for organising the Christmas cracker on 23 December 2007 when they raised £77 which is the first donation to my charity this year. Thank you guys.

My charity this year is the Robert Johns Leukaemia Fund and is a local charity which was started in 1983 by Bob Johns, in memory of his son Robert who died after fighting the disease for five long years. Robert was only 11 years old when he died. This year is the 25th anniversary of the charity and I hope that as many of you as possible will help me to raise as much money as we can towards it.

In this respect can I bring to your attention the lake on the eighth hole which has now been dubbed ‘Captain Pugwash’s’ lake for 2008, and to the fact it will cost you all 50p for each golf ball you send swimming in it. It is voluntary but it’s for a great cause so please put your money in the bottle which is on the bar in the Clubhouse.

After the recent bad weather I am hoping that the sun will shine over Easter and beyond and that we can all enjoy our golf, whatever our standard.

Happy Easter and Happy Golfing to you all.
