A 7 year personal objective for Justin and his greenkeeping team is now beginning to show true rewards. Much is talked about within the industry of long-term sustainability and lowering our carbon footprint, however, in reality few clubs have fully grasped the issue seriously.
Trethorne’s Courser Policy document was written in 2007 with a genuine focus upon the golf course environment – wildlife, new habitats, pest control, reducing the use of chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides and adopting traditional cultural practices including regular aeration of the greens and tees and increasing air and light flow throughout the golf course.
Over the past 12 months Justin and the team have been working towards achieving formal recognition for the Club via the STRI National Environmental Awards (UK). This process has resulted in Trethorne being amongst the final 24 entrants short-listed for the award. We are in good company – St Andrews, Muirfield, The London Club, The Berkshire, Walton Heath, Minchampton Hall – have all been recipients of environmental awards in the past.
The STRI representative carried out an audit of the golf course on the 1st October 2013, and was genuinely impressed at the progress the club has made. We now wait to see which award category Trethorne is placed in, with the results announced in the New Year. Watch this space!!
